In October 2024, the boys received a dose of an mRNA vaccine created by virologists at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) to prevent EEHV. The Cincinnati Zoo is the third Zoo to vaccinate elephants against EEHV.\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonzoo.org\/blog\/houston-zoo-elephant-receives-first-ever-mrna-eehv-vaccine\/\">The Houston Zoo<\/a>\u202fand the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosamondgiffordzoo.org\/news\/zoo-news\/miracle-eletwins-receive-groundbreaking-eehv-vaccine\/\">Rosamond Gifford Zoo<\/a>\u202felephants also received this ground breaking vaccine.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;]<div data-aos=\"fade-up\" class=\"image-block themed\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cincinnatizoo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/53663069935_71022f2379_b.jpg\" alt=\"elephants at elephant trek kabir and sanjay\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/683;\" \/><\/div><!-- .img-block -->[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]The elephant keepers worked closely with Kabir and Sanjay to prepare them to receive the vaccination. Injection training is accomplished using positive reinforcement operant conditioning -just like training your dog to sit with treats![\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;]<div data-aos=\"fade-up\" class=\"image-block themed\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cincinnatizoo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_2726.png\" alt=\"Elephant Getting care from keepers and vets\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 2048px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 2048\/1536;\" \/><\/div><!-- .img-block -->[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]The keepers start by teaching the boys a \u201ctarget\u201d behavior which is them leaning assorted body parts into the end of a pole.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They moved this behavior to their hip and in small increments reinforce\u202f the elephant every time their hip touches the pole<\/li>\n<li>Eventually the elephant knows to lean into the pole and even press their hip against it<\/li>\n<li>The pole is switched out with a paper clip and then eventually a blunt needle \u2013 all the while the elephant is reinforced to lean into the sharper objects and hold still. The elephant can choose to walk away from the training at any time!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The final step is training with a real needle with veterinary technicians until everyone feels comfortable with giving the vaccine![\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;]<div data-aos=\"fade-up\" class=\"image-block themed\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cincinnatizoo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/54021953083_42d5de9bbc_b.jpg\" alt=\"elephants at elephant trek\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/683;\" \/><\/div><!-- .img-block -->[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]Kabir and Sanjay are doing well post-vaccination. The mRNA vaccine\u2019s development has involved extensive preclinical trials, with positive preliminary results indicating that it can induce antibodies against the virus with no adverse side effects. The vaccine is too new to have data back on success rates, but vets are cautiously optimistic that it will provide the elephants with the protection they need. The Cincinnati Zoo is collaborating by providing some of the first samples to further understanding of the immune response to the vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>Plans also include making this vaccine available to other elephants, both in human care and then in the wild.
