[vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text]If <\/span>you\u2019re<\/span> anything like me, you <\/span>probably have<\/span> a drawer dedicated to useless junk that you <\/span>feel weird about throwing away<\/span>. <\/span>Remotes to nowhere, frayed chargers and tangled headphones, cracked smart phones, <\/span>maybe a<\/span> technicolor iPod Nano or <\/span>itty-bitty <\/span>Shuffle, random cords that <\/span>you\u2019ve<\/span> kept \u201cjust in case\u201d you manage to remember what they were for in the first place<\/span>. <\/span>This accumulation of outdated and mismatched technology is what we <\/span>refer to as<\/span> <\/span>electronic waste<\/span><\/span>, or e-waste.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″]

\"gorillas\"<\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text]According to the World Health Organization, e-waste is one of the fastest growing solid waste streams<\/span> on the planet<\/span>.<\/span> When <\/span>old or broken gadgets and their accessories <\/span>head to the landfill <\/span>(<\/span>as they would if you simply <\/span>threw<\/span> them in the trash<\/span>),<\/span> harmful substances within the items can le<\/span>ech out into soil and waterways,<\/span> negatively <\/span>impacting<\/span> human<\/span> and ecological<\/span> health.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″]
\"gorillas\"<\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text]But <\/span>people <\/span>aren\u2019t<\/span> the only ones <\/span>impacted<\/span> by electronics<\/span>:<\/span> m<\/span>ost every modern electronic device <\/span>contains<\/span> a mineral called coltan, which is <\/span>mined in regions across the Democratic Republic of Congo. <\/span>This environmentally destructive and <\/span>often dangerous p<\/span>rocess <\/span>can lead <\/span>to human rights violations for workers and<\/span> habitat loss for Congolese wildlife, including critically endan<\/span>gered<\/span> gorillas.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″]
\"gorillas\"<\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text]The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden <\/span>proudly <\/span>partners with <\/span><\/span>Eco<\/span>–<\/span>C<\/span>ell<\/span><\/span><\/a>, an e-waste recycling organization dedicated to both sustainable waste practices AND gorilla conservation<\/span>, to advocate for the responsible disposal of e-waste. <\/span>Eco<\/span>–<\/span>C<\/span>ell repurposes and safely recycles electronics, and money earned from selling reusable materials <\/span>goes directly to conservation organizations working to protect gorillas in the DRC. <\/span>By sending<\/span> e-waste to Eco<\/span>–<\/span>C<\/span>ell, you can keep harmful materials out of landfills, <\/span>help <\/span>reclaim<\/span> precious materials and reduce mining demand, and <\/span>above all else<\/span> support those working directly with gorillas to ensure they continue to thrive in the wild.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″]

Resist the temptation to get the latest iPhone model or the newest Beats headphones. See how long you can make your devices last\u2014<\/span>it\u2019s<\/span> good for the environment AND your wallet! <\/span>If enough people opt out of the consumer culture mindset that you need the latest and greatest gadgets, we can gradually reduce the demand for these electronics, <\/span>therefore<\/span> reducing the demand for coltan<\/span>\u2014which means healthier outcomes for people and gorillas alike.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]So<\/span> get a box and start clearing out that junk drawer!
